Conor McAllister (Ballymena) took some fine scalps at the Classic Minerals sponsored Lurgan Criterium on Friday night.
It was a hotly contested race, with around thirty riders facing the starter, and the action started right from the line when John Neill (Phoenix ) went straight into a fifty metre lead. He was caught after one lap of the half mile circuit, and from then on a series of moves by such top riders as Simon Williams (Juiced Orchard ), Martyn Irvine (CurranRacing ), Thomas Martin (Clann Eireann ), Glen Kinning (Castlereagh ) and others appeared to be winning moves, only to be nullified in a short time.
Alastair McSorley (Apollo ) took the first prime after fifteen minutes of racing, by which point half the field had lost contact.Irvine took the second prime, and soon after McAllister went into a ten second lead. While Irvine, Michael Murray, Martin and Williams took turns trying to pull him back, they sometimes seemed to be looking for more help than was available, and the young Ballymena cyclist went on to take a fine victory in front of an appreciative crowd.
